Phelps to compete in Shanghai worlds

Multi-Olympic champion Michael Phelps will make his appearance at this year's swimming world championships in Shanghai.

The USA Swimming Thursday announced a star-studded 42-member team which includes 25 Olympians.

Phelps is expected to compete in the 200m freestyle, the 100m and 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.

Ryan Lochte, the second star attraction in the team, will swim the 200m free, 200m backstroke and the 200m and 400m individual medleys.

The women's team will see Natalie Coughlin, the first American female athlete to win six medals in one Olympics when she made her second Olympic appearance at Beijing in 2008.

The swimmers qualified for the championships based on their results from the 2010 US championships and 2010 Pan Pacific Championships.

The 2011 World Championships will be the last major international meeting prior to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Li Na spearheads Asia's Open push

Source: China Daily

China's Li Na cruised into the Australian Open's third round on Wednesday to maintain hopes of a first Asian Grand Slam singles title, as Japan's Kei Nishikori also progressed.

Ninth-seeded Li downed Russia's Evgeniya Rodina 6-3, 6-2 to stay on track, while Japanese idol Nishikori beat Florian Mayer of Germany in four sets. China's Peng Shuai will play her second match on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Li is riding a wave of confidence after shocking favourite Kim Clijsters in this month's Sydney International final, and following her run to last year's Australian Open semis.

"I won last week so maybe I feel more confident. I just hope I'll continue to take this confidence and see how far away I can go," she said.

Li, who beat Sophie Arvidsson of Sweden in straight sets in the first round before accounting for Rodina on Wednesday, added she still had room to improve.

"I didn't feel special tonight," she said. "This girl, I didn't know anything about her before. I didn't see her practice, I didn't practice with her.

"I was thinking that many balls I hit were winners, but she still came back and hit them deep and she ran me around a lot today."

Li now plays Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova ahead of a possible fourth round clash against Belarusian eighth seed Victoria Azarenka.

She could then meet Venus Williams in the quarterfinals in a rematch of 2010, when Li shocked the American to reach the final four.

"I only look one round ahead because before, I always looked at the draw and thought 'Oh, I can be in the quarterfinal or something', and I always lost in the first round, second round," she said.

"After that I just said, 'Okay focus, don't think about it too much'."

China to invite a technical consultant from abroad: soccer chief

Source: Xinhua

BEIJING - Wei Di, new chief of the Chinese Football Association, said that the national team will look out for a foreign technical consultant rather than appointing a new coach after the Asian Cup.

There's no time table and candidates list for the soccer consultant, though, according to Wei.

Aware of the importance of keeping a relatively stable structure of the coaching staff, Wei emphasized that the CFA would not consider to sack head coach Gao Hongbo right after their disappointing Asian Cup campaign.

"To blame the coach and to make a quick change of his post are what the CFA used to do after suffering any bad result. It's irresponsible and we decided not to do it again," said Wei.

The Chinese nationals, who had needed a victory by at least two goals on Sunday to make the knockout stage, only managed a 2-2 draw with strong rivals Uzbekistan and were eliminated from the ongoing Asian Cup in Qatar.

They won over Kuwait but lost to Qatar in the previous Group A matches, which are not good enough to beat the hosts' chance of advance.

China's team leader Cao Jingwei told press in the post-match mixed zone that the country's soccer governing body will not remove the coaching staff after their Asian Cup exit, and he was echoed back in China by Wei.

"It's the first Asian Cup for Gao Hongbo as head coach of the national team. He had done his best," said Wei. "A team needs time to get experienced and so does a coach."

"The CFA believe that Gao and his team are on their way of getting established and we thought they did show potential through these three games, though the results are far from the fans' expectation," he added.

Wei said the CFA did not yet consider to look for a foreign coach, like they most frequently did following the national team's losing experience, but they are pondering to hire someone to help Gao become a better coach.

"The CFA officials have agreed that it's necessary for China's soccer to have some great coaches of our own. So we decided to go abroad and to invite a coach for the coaches," he said.
